Aparigraha: Letting Go with the Seasons

As the seasons shift and the light around us changes, nature models what yogic philosophy has long taught:
everything moves in cycles of accumulation and release.
In this moment, with the eclipse season stirring transformation and the earth shifting from winter’s stillness toward spring’s renewal, we’re invited to practice one of yoga’s most liberating principles:
aparigraha — the art of letting go.
Aparigraha, a key yama from the Yoga Sutras, translates as non‑attachment or non‑grasping. It’s the reminder that clinging (to possessions, identities, habits, or even ideas of who we think we should be) binds us to suffering. Just as the trees must shed their leaves to make space for new growth, we too must trust in the wisdom of release.

Eclipses are cosmic catalysts for change. As I write this, we are in the middle of an eclipse season and I feel it in the air. Eclipses reveal what we’ve outgrown, often illuminating truths we’ve been hesitant to face. It can be uncomfortable...Endings rarely feel easy...But within that discomfort lies divine opportunity. Aparigraha helps us meet this energy with grace rather than resistance. When we soften our grip, we align ourselves with the natural flow of life’s cycles.
Living Aparigraha This Season
- Reflect and release: Journal on what feels heavy, stagnant, or no longer aligned. What are you ready to surrender before stepping into spring’s new energy?
- Simplify your space and schedule: Clear away clutter or commitments that no longer support your growth.
- Practice gratitude: Instead of focusing on what’s leaving, honour what each phase has taught you.
- Breathe it out: With each exhale, imagine letting go, trusting your inhale will always bring in what’s next.
This change of season reminds us that endings are never final:
they are fertile ground for new beginnings.
Under these eclipsed skies, aparigraha invites you to trust the unfolding, to loosen your grasp, and to remember that life’s abundance flows most freely to open hands and open hearts.
